Open call:

Graffiti / Urban-Art artists wanted for the FREEDOM project

You are a graffiti or urban-artist and you want to create a large wall?

Then apply now for the FREEDOM project and convince the jury of your skills and ideas. It is open to single artists and groups.

The FREEDOM project (led by three partners – ArtReach, FabriC and Haus Drei) is organising wall paintings as part of the Night of Festivals events in the UK – Leicester (2-4 October 2015) and in Gabrovo, Bulgaria (as part of the Gabrovo Carnival in May 2016), as well as in Hamburg (Germany) at the STAMP Festival (1.-3. July 2016) and the Night of Festivals event in London (UK) in August 2016.

The presentations will reach live audiences of 250,000 plus and stimulate engagement from many thousands more through online activity.

The project wants to find artists who can be commissioned to deliver urban-art at each of the named events, but will also give all high quality submissions an “exhibition” through the online Digital Freedom Wall.

All high quality proposals submitted as designs or exemplar images will be published on the Digital Freedom Wall project web site.

What is the FREEDOM WALL about?

The theme of the wall paintings is “celebrating the values of freedom and democracy through artistic innovation”.

For the digital Freedom Wall project we are inviting artists of any nationality or level of experience to submit a work / proposal that reflects or responds to the theme of freedom and democracy.

Some artists will be selected to create their work on real, physical walls in the named cities as part of the FREEDOM project/Night of Festivals events. However, all high quality proposals submitted in an appropriate format will be published on the web site.

What you need to bring

The project jury is looking for submissions that are original and inventive and that relate to the project theme. Submissions may be designed in response to walls that are shown as possible canvases on the project web site, or simply be ideas that are transferable at different scales or in different shapes.

We need you to submit a design drawing or an image superimposed onto an example wall.

In order to be selected to make the work on a real, physical wall you need to demonstrate that you have the skills and experience to deliver the project. Examples of previous work would be helpful.

How to apply?

Indicate where and when you want to work. It is possible to apply for more than one city. The following sites and dates are available:

  • Gabrovo (Bulgaria) in May 2016
  • Hamburg (Germany) STAMP Festival 1.-3. July 2016
  • London Night of Festivals (UK) in August 2016

Send us an e-mail to jury@digitalfreedomwall.eu with:

  • one or more designs either as design sketches or as images superimposed on the picture of an actual wall
  • a brief cv and your contact information
  • permission that we can present your idea on the Digital Freedom Wall web site
  • images of any walls you have previously painted

The Jury will publish all interesting proposals and select artists to deliver their work at each festival.

How will the work be delivered in real time?

If you are selected to deliver your work in real time then the appropriate project partner will help you in planning and realization.

A fee will be paid (sum dependent on the scale and scope of the work) and travel and accommodation costs, plus per diems, will be paid. Materials and required equipment and tools, such as scaffolding or other working platforms, will be provided.
